What Surfaces Can Be Pressure Washed?

Pressure washing is commonly used to clean suitable concrete driveways, sidewalks, patios, and commercial surfaces. Siding, roofing, wood, and coated materials require a different assessment and may need lower-pressure cleaning.

The material alone does not determine the approach. Its condition, existing finish, and the buildup being removed also matter.

Concrete Driveways, Sidewalks, and Patios

Sound concrete is a common candidate for pressure washing. Cleaning can address dirt, algae, and surface buildup on driveways, walkways, parking pads, and patios.

Before cleaning, tell your provider about recent installation, sealers, decorative finishes, repairs, or deteriorating areas. These details can change the recommended method.

Oil, rust, red clay, and other specialty stains may require separate treatment. Cleaning does not repair cracks or restore worn concrete.

Brick and Pavers

Brick and pavers should be assessed before choosing equipment, pressure, or cleaning products.

The condition of the masonry, mortar, joints, and any sealer matters. Loose material, damaged mortar, or deteriorating surfaces may need repairs before cleaning.

Send photos and mention any previous sealing or restoration work. A method appropriate for one masonry surface may be unsuitable for another.

House Siding and Painted Exteriors

House washing often uses lower pressure and cleaning solutions selected for the material and buildup. Increasing water pressure is not automatically the right way to address stubborn marks.

Loose paint, damaged siding, gaps, and known leaks should be discussed before scheduling.

A standard house wash addresses the surfaces and buildup listed in the estimate. Oxidation, rust, and red-clay staining may require separate assessment and treatment.

Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Asphalt shingles should not be cleaned with high-pressure washing. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association advises against pressure washing and scrubbing because these methods can damage the roofing surface.

For suitable roofs, cleaning should follow the shingle manufacturer’s guidance. Roof condition and access also need assessment before treatment.

At Premier, we perform roof cleaning without walking on the roof. Cleaning addresses suitable buildup and discoloration; leaks, damaged shingles, and other roofing concerns require a roofer.

Wood Fences and Decks

Wood cleaning requires consideration of the wood’s condition and any existing stain, paint, or coating.

The project may involve cleaning, brightening, or additional preparation before staining. More pressure is not automatically better, and cleaning cannot repair rotten boards or structural damage.

If staining is planned, discuss the complete preparation process and drying requirements before scheduling the work.

Windows and Exterior Glass

Dedicated window cleaning is a separate service from house washing.

Rinsing windows during an exterior wash does not provide the same result as cleaning the glass with an appropriate window-cleaning method.

Tell us about damaged panes, failing seals, specialty coatings, or access concerns. Your estimate should identify which windows and sides of the glass are included.

Commercial Buildings and Shared Areas

Commercial properties often contain several materials that need different cleaning approaches.

A single project might include lower-pressure building washing, concrete cleaning, and dedicated exterior window cleaning. Entrances, restaurant service areas, and dumpster pads may also require treatment for heavier buildup.

Define each area in the estimate and coordinate access, operating hours, and any temporary restrictions before work begins.

What Should You Tell Your Cleaning Provider?

When requesting an estimate, send your property address and photos showing the full area and any concerns.

Mention:

  • The surface material, if known
  • Existing paint, stain, sealers, or coatings
  • Recent installation or repairs
  • Visible damage or known leaks
  • Previous cleaning attempts
  • The buildup or stains you most want addressed

This information helps your provider recommend an appropriate method and explain what results to expect.
